Designed without trapezes the JB 5/50
is easy to tack & gybe and does not require great agility or
super reflexes to enjoy its' superior performance.
SPEED
The J B 5/50 is very fast. It planes upwind. Reaching with the kite up is an absolute
delight - super speed & always under control, its' never scarey
as the boat always feels light & responsive . The wider decks make hiking easier to keep the
boat flat and fast.
The Australian yardstick is 99. It's performance around the
course shows that it is faster than a 470, Tasar &
Fireball.
If racing is your interest you won't be playing follow the leader
that's for sure.
STABILITY
Due
to its beam this boat is remarkably stable. Novice crews
immediately feel confident as they move around the cockpit. When you
gybe you need not expect a swim & you
won't be left scrambling inboard when a gust breaks off.
SIMPLICITY
The JB 5/50's rig is very simple so there's not that much to
fiddle with or for that matter to fix. Your challenge will be
in boat handling, sail trim and race tactics. The asymmetric
spinnaker is easy to handle and gybing creates no problems for
your crew, in fact the whole boat is user friendly and a pleasure
to sail and maintain.
